I love Labyrinth, I think it's Jim Henson at his finest. I was looking for another Alphonse Mucha illustration to translate to pop-culture, and the painting "Gismonda" seems to fit well with the masquerade ball in the movie. Honestly, though, I really just wanted the excuse to draw that dress.

Where are you from?

Nahant, Massachusetts...just north on Boston, right on the ocean. It's a wicked pissah.

How did you get started designing t-shirts?

I was an elementary art school teacher for a long time then I lost my job two years ago. I decided to try to make a living by being an artist. I was doing more traditional art, had a few small local shows, but then I stumbled onto RedBubble. com and started trying to translate my art into T-shirt designs. There's this whole tee shirt culture that I wasn't aware of, and now I am hooked.

What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?

Design what you love, don't try to second guess what will sell. Find a good artist's group to be a part of. I belong to one, called the "RBC" and their help, critiques and support is invaluable. And buy a copy of "Art and Fear" by David Bayles and Ted Orland....I keep mine on my desk and flip through it when I am frustrated or discouraged.

What would be your dream job?

Animating at Disney in the early '90's, working alongside Glen Keane.

What is your favorite thing about art nouveau?
The flowing, clean lines.... I love line, and I love to draw, and I feel like art nouveau is all about that.

What would your ideal house be like?

I guess the first thought that should have sprung to my mind is "wherever my family is", but in reality, it was "somewhere with a live-in maid."

Calvin vs. Hobbes: which would win the battle?

I asked my six-year old son Ryan this question, and he answered it for me: "If they were imagining, like the tiger was big, when they imagine, then the tiger, definitely....tiger vs. boy? Rawr! Tiger would win."

What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?

Cartoons, probably...I loved "Battle of the Planets"
