About the artist
castlepop
Tell us a bit about this design.
(SPOILER ALERT) We were trying to capture the duality of man, that Jungian thing, and the split personality of Tyler Durden. The initial idea was showing them as two sides of the same coin, but Two-Face already has a corner on that metaphor. Plus, how do you show two sides of a coin simultaneously?
Where are you from?
We live in the great borough of Brooklyn, USA—home of the Cyclone and Tom’s Restaurant; birthplace of Woody Allen and Judge Judy.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
Castlepöp is actually two people, two married people who have joined their ideas and talent into a single entity with the pop culture knowledge and artistic talents of one very tall shemale.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
That we’re the anonymous donors who built all those fancy, new hospital wings.
Name a few of your favorite things.
her: sushi, mechanical pencils, tamarind balls, monocles, anthropomorphic animals, hammocks, sushi again
him: Louis Armstrong, Louis C.K., fresh bagels, drive-in movies, bacon cheeseburgers, tiny toys from gumball machines,
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
her: The first thing I remember drawing is the Smurfs. I was drawing Papa Smurf and getting really frustrated because he didn’t look right. Years later, I discovered I’d forgotten his beard.
him: I made “Raiders of the Lost Ark” figures & sets out of paper because Kenner hadn’t made them yet.
What is your favorite thing about castles?
her: Moats filled with alligators and giant fireplaces that you can stand in.
him: That tiny, round room at the top of the highest tower and ample wall space for hanging tapestries.
Coffee vs. tea: which would win the battle?
her: Coffee, because its stronger, faster & more agile.
him: Coffee, because coffee is strong, like bull.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
her: My TMNT Teefury shirt (Philip Tseng’s “Turtle Power!”) because it was the first shirt that my husband got me and it has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on it.
him: My “Do The Right Thing” shirt that I got on my very first trip to Brooklyn, way back when the borough was still a foreboding and exotic place. I bought it at Spike Lee’s (now defunct) clothing store.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
her: reading—“The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Diaz. That book blew my mind.
him: movies—I love Wayne Wang & Paul Auster’s “Smoke.” It’s a film about telling stories, with some top-notch acting by Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, and Forest Whitaker. I watch it all the time.
What inspires your work?
Pop culture clusterfucking and the promise of mashing together two things we love into a new, and wonderful, third thing. Also, web videos of baby pandas sneezing.
Any shout outs?
Our family, their families, Bill Mechanic, our profane friends at the RBC, Dawnelle the taco lady, Mr. aWESome, Harvey K. Ribbons, The Professa, and our ancient iMac G4 (for not dying).
