Tell us about this design.
I have never done many “mash-up” shirts, but this idea seemed simple enough to work for me because it’s two ideas I can stand for: Firefly and the Peanuts. Both rock, both are awesome. So why not merge them in one design? I also feel both “gangs” have things in common – they argue, they make each other angry, they have adventures together and in the end they stick together. The execution of the design was easier than I thought, it works with my “cute” drawing style.
Where are you from?
I am from Graz in Austria, a really neat city which I recommend everyone to visit. It’s much cooler than Salzburg and Vienna, I swear! And it has a giant hill in the middle, which the devil has supposedly dropped there. And no, the tourism office doesn’t pay me to say that! I really love my city. Currently I am living in my second favorite city, New York.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I started out with iron-on pictures at home when I was 19 years old. I always loved the thought of putting designs I loved on shirts (it started out with designs by other artists). Later, the biggest motivation was when I had to pay tuition around 2 years ago. I really needed money. It has worked out quite well.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
For shirts: Keep on trying and trying and trying! I submitted almost 30 designs before my first one was printed. Persistency and the will to learn and accept critique by others is vital. Open your mind for new concepts, but don’t leave your own style and love for certain topics – don’t bend to the Star Wars theme just because it might sell well. Study other people’s art. Read articles. Deal with the industry. And sometimes, it’s ok to sell yourself out a little. Just don’t do it too often ;-)
What would be your dream job?
If I wasn’t a designer (which is kind of my dream job) I would have maybe tried to become an actress, and I have acted in amateur plays, but I was always too insecure to become a professional. I was in a great play here in NY written by friends who really brought back my love for silly acting. I played 7 different extras in that show, 5 of whom died. Besides the actress thing, I would have probably tried to follow a romantic profession such as defender of the innocent, ninja or pirate lady. Time traveler would also be nice. Something where you get out into the sun more often.
What is your favorite thing about Firefly?
Firefly is the show where I seriously loved every single character. Usually I have my 2-4 characters I like in shows, but Firefly managed to get me interested in every single one. It is well, smartly written and doesn’t suffer under gender clichés and tropes like many other TV shows. It also always reminded me of one of my favorite Anime shows, “Cowboy Bebop”. And, come one, merging Western with Sci-Fi: Unbeatable.
What would your ideal house be like?
As someone who has lived in shared flats all her life, my ideal house would probable one that I didn’t have to share. My own bathroom, my own kitchen – maybe even a separated work area. At least that’s a dream house I might be able to get one day. If I wanted to get a little fantastic, I’d choose the house Jake and Finn live in in Adventure Time.
Popsicles vs. ice cream: which would win the battle?
Ice Cream wins, because it is capable of carrying all those tasty chunks of cookies, chocolate, caramel or whatever in it. Ice cream is only perfect when it has chunks of yummy stuff in it!
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
There is not just one: Europe had a lot of cartoons that were European/Japanese productions. Kids in Austria used to grow up with those and nobody knows them here in the USA which shocked me when I first came here. One of my favorite was “Alfred J. Kwak”, a cartoon about a little smart duck who saved the world all the time, or “Vicky the Viking” about a small Viking boy who saved everybody with wits instead of force.
When I started watching Cartoon Network at the age of 15, what influenced me the most were Dexter’s Lab, Invader Zim, Ren and Stimpy and Cow and Chicken.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
