Tell us about this design.
I always liked horror movie anthologies and anthologies in general that dealt with the weird. My co-writer, Mark Pellegrini, came up with a funny idea for a "Tales from the Crypt" shirt, while at the same time I was entertaining a "Twilight Zone" idea. We ended up mashing the two together, and he helped me out on design choices.
Where are you from?
Little Rock, Arkansas.
Which art style would you most like to learn?
I wish I could do speed painting, and more realistic painting in general. I reached a certain threshold some years ago and found a "limit" that I can't seem to pass. If I could draw faster PERIOD, I would be pleased!
If you had a time machine, which era would you visit first?
Probably the 20's. I really love vintage art and the whole retro style of the times. Life was very different back then, too.
What goal do you most aspire towards?
Be more clever, work faster, and sell harder. I guess that's 3 goals...
If you could stop any t-shirt trend in its tracks, which would you end? What trend would you like to see started?
People are going to hate me for this, but Dr. Who. My Achilles Heel is that I can't draw anything that I don't have a vested interest in, no matter how much is at stake... and since I have no real fondness for the Doctor, that's a lucrative market that I can't break! I'd love to see more love for the Twilight Zone, as I think it's a more household name franchise that gets overlooked.
Would you rather star in a comic book or a movie?
Movie.
Cereal vs. pastries: which would win the battle?
Depends. Is Cap'n Crunch leading the battle? If so, then they win.
Describe the first shirt you ever designed.
It was our high school homecoming shirt, back in 1999... since it was around Halloween, I drew our principal as a zombie bursting out of the ground, trying to devour a student. I still own that shirt to this day.
What has been your most inspiring art experience?
For drawing, it would have to be when I first got exposed to Joe Madureira in the mid 90's. I emulated his style and learned to self-teach, and I still list him as being perhaps my greatest influence. But overall, I would say it is my gradual exposure to vintage styles and streamlining -- it's helped me tremendously in everything I've done over the last few years.
