Tell us about this design.
My favorite character from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has to be Captain Hammer. So, I tried to think of an ego-driven, music-related fundraiser that Hammer would do, and came up with this.
Where are you from?
Christiansburg, VA, home of 3 Subways and 2 McDonalds. (We're kind of a big deal)
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I have always been a fan of the designs I've seen on sites like TeeFury and decided I would try my hand at it. Ever since then I have been hooked. The design work I do for my job doesn't always allow much room to be creative, so working on t-shirts has been a welcome change!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Sometimes it can be frustratingly hard to come up with an idea if you are just sitting there with a blank sheet of paper, waiting for awesomeness to flow from your pencil. I always carry a small sketchbook with me so that when something pops in my head, I can get it down on paper. Also, Google your idea before you start. There is no worse feeling than spending hours on a project only to find that John Doe from Saskatchewan beat you to it.
What would be your dream job?
Designing t-shirts for a living would be nice. That or Space Cowboy.
What is your favorite thing about Dr. Horrible?
As with anything Joss Whedon does, the writing is always epic. What he was able to do with Dr. Horrible in the midst of a writer's strike and with such a low budget is amazing. Needless to say I am eagerly waiting to see what he does with the Avengers!
What would your ideal house be like?
I've always said the one thing I've wanted in my dream house would be an old school NBA Jam arcade cabinet from the 90s. Or I would just take the house from the movie Blank Check.
Cowboys vs. ghosts: which would win the battle?
I guess that depends on the ghost. If it was the ghost from Paranormal Activity I would have to give it to the ghost. If it was Bill "Ghost Dad" Cosby, I would have to give it to the Cowboy.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I have always (and still today) been a huge fan of comic books. Marvel, DC, Image or whatever else I could get a hold of. I'd say my favorite issue as a kid was X-Men #25 with art by Andy Kubert. Mostly because it had a sweet 3-D Gambit card on the cover.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
My productivity is usually hampered by Kotaku, io9 and also a number of design t-shirt design sites. Of course the first website I check out every morning is TeeFury.
Any shout outs?
Thanks to my wife Ellie, my sister Emily and my parents for their support! A big thank you to TeeFury and the whole TeeFury community! You guys are the best! Check out my website at www.bensmith-design.com to see more of my work or drop me a line. Thanks all!
