Tell us about this design.
GOBiAS … the hot, steaming coffee place that will not only whip, cream, and blow your mind – no, their magic coffee also tastes like lighter fluid and … blue. Inspired by Arrested Development's most inept candidates to ever start their own business: George Oscar Bluth (aka GOB) & Tobias Fünke.
Where are you from?
Leipzig, Germany … the city where guys like Goethe, Bach and Luther used to hang out.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
One of my favourite bands The Mars Volta had a "design a shirt“ contest. That got me intrigued. After being rejected *sigh*, I started creating DIY band shirts, iron-ons, spraypaint, that kind of stuff … one single shirt at a time and strictly for personal use (yeah, I was the only kid rocking a glow-in-the dark Yeah-Yeah-Yeahs tee). Earlier this year, when I ordered shirts from TeeFury I just thought "what the heck, you can do that too!“ and here I am, typing my second interview for TeeFury.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Never leave the house without sketchbook & pencil, and always try to work with the best equipment you can afford. Oh and: always keep backups!
What would be your dream job?
I would love to earn my money by being creative. I mean: I draw, I write, I even made music once … there's gotta be some way to make a living from that, right? I one day hope to quit my office job and pay my bills from being an artist / author alone.
What is your favorite thing about Arrested Development?
The brilliant writing. No sentence, not even a silence without clever pun or double entendre. The lack of political correctness. The writers self-confidence not to explain or explicitly point out the punchlines. The fact that you are forced to actually think before you laugh. Well … and the freakishly unique characters of course.
What would your ideal house be like?
Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, you know … the house on the waterfall.
Pencil vs. computer: which would win the battle?
As long as it's one of those pencils with attached eraser … the pencil of course. All it takes is paper and some light. The computer may be a powerful magic machine with tons of colours, brushes, vectors and fonts at its command … but you simply pull the plug and it's nothing but a box with wires hanging out of it.
Also pencils don't usually crash and destroy all of your work of the past 6 months.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I read lots of conventional books, but even more comics. Here in Europe, Disney used to publish something called "The Donald Duck Pocket Books“, which were 250 pages of adventures, fun and anthropomorphic animals a month. I enjoyed those a lot. Later, Don Rosa published "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck“, won the Eisner Award for it and got me into graphic novels. I still love, treasure and re-read that book to that day, it's amazing.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
Can't really think of any. Oh wait ... www.zombo.com comes to mind. old but still the most important site online.
