Mutant & Proud
About the artistArt curated by
Tell us about this design.
It was inspired by the excellent X-Men: First Class. The 'Mutant & Proud' message is a bit of a recurring theme and I thought it would look cool as an almost political style logo... with a subtle X motif hidden through it.
Where are you from?
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I need to get all the little random doodles and characters that I think of out my head, otherwise it gets a little crowded in there. Some of the sketches wound up on flickr and tumblr and the like. A few people commented that they'd make cool tees... and I've just kinda found myself doing it.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
I always just try to design stuff that I like, and would wear myself. So i'd recommend doing that, not trying to design stuff that you 'think' people want... i think that's a road to disappointment. Once you've got something you like, stick it online and try and get it seen by as many people as possible through the likes of flickr, tumblr etc. If you design it, they will come... eventually.
What would be your dream job?
This tee designing game is pretty good fun - maybe just this on a much bigger scale.
What is your favorite thing about the X-Men?
I like how creative some of them are with their powers. Torturing someone by twisting the fillings inside their teeth? Sheesh. Being able to chill a pals warm beer? Cheers. It's not all just about saving the world, they have their day to day uses too...
What would your ideal house be like?
It'd have a lot of space for t-shirts... i'm seriously running out of space for all the ones i've got. It would also probably in Toronto.
If you had a mutant power, what would it be?
It's a common one, but I'd really like the ability to freeze time. That way I could get all the things done that I try to cram into my day to day... If that one turns out to be too big for me, or i'm not responsible enough ( you know, with the great power/responsibility thing) The ability to instantly take my designs out my head and put them out in the world would be awesome.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
As a kid, cartoons and movies. I guess I liked all the usual ones for a guy my age - ThunderCats, Transformers, GhostBusters, TMNT, M.A.S.K, He-Man, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends... ah memories...
What are a few of your favorite websites?
SuperPunch, ToplessRobot, ComicsAlliance and Shirtoid are all very inspiring and worth checking out on a daily basis.
Any shout outs?
The RBC - a new online collective i'm a member of. Hopefully we'll have a lot more designs heading the TeeFury way. Oh, and Prof X, who I share my birthday with. And hairstyle.
