Tell us about this design.
My design is a tribute to the iconic "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster, but seen from Dr Horrible's point of view. It's a view I subscribe to. None of this stiff upper lip business here, the status is definitely not quo these days.
Where are you from?
I'm from Melbourne, Australia. Lived here all my life, will probably die here. In this chair, right here where I'm sitting now, I imagine.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
A brother told me he wanted to write a movie script and start a tshirt label just to see if we could do it, so we started bouncing ideas around and by the end of conversation I was committed to creating some illustrations for a new tee range and writing a buddy-cop movie starring Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrel. Both projects are still under development, but we're making slow progress. My popcult tees are an offshoot of the main label, but they're slowly becoming my main focus lately. I haven't heard back from Will Ferrel or Vince Vaughn yet though.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Draw! Draw! Draw! And don't focus on doing it for the money. Find your style. Don't be afraid to abandon a work if you're stuck. Move on and return to it later with fresh eyes. Put your work on the net, get opinions, show people around you that you can trust to be honest and grow a really thick skin. I mean REALLY thick. When you're happy with what you can do, ignore everyone and just do whatever the hell you like and be happy.
What would be your dream job?
I'm doing it. I've been self employed for nearly a decade in design. It's allowed me to work from home, be my own boss, watch my kids grow up and have freedom that you can't get working for someone else and their goals. I've been very lucky, but I've also worked damn hard over the years as well. Working from home isn't all about designing in your underwear and taking 9 hour liquid lunches. Well, ok, it is.. but you have to work through the night to make up for lost time though.
What is your favorite thing about Dr Horrible?
The writing. Dr Horrible sets the tone perfectly with his "...status is not quo" line in the opening minutes, then you spend the rest of your time scratching your head wondering how they came up with some many perfect lines, many which almost slip past without you noticing, such is the brilliant job they all do.
What would your ideal house be like?
My ideal house is one I own and no-one can take away from me. I have that already, so I'm happy. Now I just try to ignore the bits that need maintenance. When it gets real bad I'll sell it and buy another house. I'd rather scoop out my eyes with dirty salad tongs than work on a house. Painting...pfft.
Good vs. evil: which would win the battle?
Evil. Evil always win. It's a fact. Ask Louis Cypher.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I was - and still am - into movies, more than the other two. Loved watching old movies at night with my family as a kid. Really loved the classic scifi like Forbidden Planet, Thing from Another World and The Day the Earth Stood Still, but also couldn't get enough of the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis comedies.
