Teenage Mutant Ninja Troopas
About the artistArt curated by
Tell us about this design.
Originally, Skorp had done up a genius MS Paint concept of Koopa Troopas dressed as Ninja Turtles. Once I set to designing the final image, it seemed to work better as TMNT theme rather than a Mario theme. The original image (side art on our "Long Live Charlie Pace" design) Was something like 20 colors. Since TeeFury's maximum colors option is 6, Skorp and I kinda looked at each other like "well that was a dumb thing to do, how the heck are we going to cut this to 6?!" so we opted for a "vintage" style design. We ended up liking the 6 color better in the end because it looks like a shirt you might have had since the early '90s!
Where are you from?
We aren't sure, something to do with our Mother... we try not to think about it...
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
Slowly. Then quickly. We started making designs for ourselves, mainly out of just being generally silly people. We began getting some good feedback on the designs and suddenly we can't keep up with all the ideas we have in our queue!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Skorp: Don't design shirts, just buy ours! :D
Dakin: Don't worry about what other people think. It's hard, but there will be someone who hates your work. That's all there is to it. You can't attempt to satisfy everyone, it's a pointless endeavor. Make what you like, the way you like it and be truthful to your style. That's not to say you should ignore constructive criticism, in fact, you should actively seek it. But take it for what it truly is.... an opinion of an individual with no more right to define the truth of your design than you have.
What would be your dream job?
Designing sweet Tees! We're working on that now! I'm attempting to teach Skorp PhotoShop so I can at least get him to make crappy PS concepts rather than crappy MS Paint concepts.
What is your favorite thing about TMNT?
Skorp: Trying to imagine what Michelangelo's parties would have been like once he turned 21!
Dakin: I really like the variation the whole concept has taken over the years. While the comics, cartoons, toys and movies have had drastically different tones and themes, they somehow all remain a part of the whole that is TMNT. Also, if I were to sit down and pick an animal to anthropomorphize into a secret sect of ninjas, I can bet that turtles would never cross my mind! How did they DO that?!
What would your ideal house be like?
Skorp: I want the sewer/subway system "house" from TMNT! My wife disagrees...
Dakin: My brother is very reactionary, so while this might sound awesome as of writing an interview for a TMNT shirt, I'm betting the "charm" of the sewers would wear off quickly. As for me, I just want something with some property attached. I cringe at houses with 4 square feet of grass in the front lawn. I always imagine the husband looking to his wife and saying "I'm gonna go mow the lawn dear" and chuckle at him making one quick swipe with the mower, dusting his hand off and grabbing a beer at the work he has just accomplished ;)
Pizza vs. ice cream: which would win the battle?
OK, being that this is a TMNT shirt, pizza seems like an obvious choice. But let me tell you what ladies and gentleman... WE HATE PIZZA! Not pizza itself, but more like the concept of it. Between myself, Skorp and our wives we combine for a whopping 10 million years of working in the pizza industry! That's a long time guys. Hate it, hate it, hate it! Give us ice cream or give us death!
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Skorp: Oh man does anyone remember Dino-Riders?! Most under-rated thing ever! These guys strapped GUNS on to DINOSAURS, controlled them MENTALLY and then RODE them! I gotta go dig out my old VHS and watch this again!
Dakin: There was a pretty fair mix for me when I was a kid but comics were the only one of those things that was portable at that time. I spent a lot of time reading comics and that has lead into my love of books today (read the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind!). For some reason I can't define, W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S. was my favorite back then. I also was really into Spawn.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
The always fascinating TeeFury.com, the dreaded Facebook.com (find us at Clever Shirts by Skorp!), treasure hunting on Craigslist.com, dorkin' out on IGN.com and who doesn't love Google-ing themselves now and again?! Oh and Skorp LOVES the site damnyouautocorrect.com!
Any shout outs?
Everyone that helped us get pancakes on our very first shirt! THANKS GUYS! We hope you are enjoying it :D
