Well, it was actually inspired by the Teefury crowd. When I was on here several weeks ago, I had a lot of positive feedback for a Sailor Jerry inspired design for Flogging Molly. As it was a Man’s ruin type design the title He-man’s ruin popped into my head and the rest is history.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Cornwall in England, but I currently live in Santa Cruz, Bolivia with my wife in our freshly bought home.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I went down a route that I think is pretty common. I could draw and always liked t shirt designs. I thought I’d start a t shirt company but soon realized I had no clue how to translate my ideas digitally. The company obviously failed so I started learning how to use Adobe programs and slowly just started submitting to competitions and bands. I think it was more than a year until I found my first client who I am still designing for now 4 years later.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
I always hear the advice to “find a style” but I think a style can only develop naturally. I think the most important thing is to find techniques and programs that compliment your art. Some people work traditionally and scan, some people work digitally over a scanned sketch and other just go straight to the digital canvas. I produce many different types of work but I think the reoccurring thing you will see in my work is clean line work and this is because of the program I use suits me.
What would be your dream job?
Hmm, I think professional surfer would a good lifestyle to have. I enjoy what I do now but you do find yourself hunched over a computer screen at the oddest hours of day and night and I would much prefer to be paid to surf the best waves around the world and design as a hobby so I could just make designs I enjoy making like this one.
What is your favorite thing about tattoos?
When idiots have words written on them in foreign languages and it doesn’t say what they think. I lived in Taiwan for 2 years and met a guy one night and my Taiwanese girlfriend pointed out that he had cooked chicken written on his arm instead of rooster (as in year of the rooster). I nearly died laughing when I saw his face. I’ve come close with a spelling mistake before but my wife caught it just in time.
What would your ideal house be like?
Castle Grayskull would be pretty bad ass. I loved playing with that toy when I was young. I think add a fireman’s pole, some hammocks and pop it on a private beach with good waves and that would be pretty close to perfect.
Transformers vs. Thundercats: which would win the battle?
Transformers without a doubt. Panthro was the only tough thundercat but OP would crush him. I’m surprised Mum-Ra never managed to beat them to be honest.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Definitely cartoons. I always spent Sunday morning in bed watching them all. One of my favourites was Centurions. Awesome cartoon. Also Spiderman and his amazing friends. I used to run to school with my hand out in front of me pretending to be Iceman. Yes I am a dork, it’s ok.
