I love robots. I love Portal. When Portal 2 came with robots I exclaimed all sorts of Lonely Island expletives and rejoiced. The Atlas & Peabody duo was probably highly inspired by Laurel and Hardy, so to me this image was pretty much something that's as natural as cake and chocolate! This was my first project that I put on the Teefury forums as it formed, and I must say it was fun to share the creative process with the community and get some feedback.
Where are you from?
Johannesburg and Taiwan are my two standard answers, but what I really should say is the United States of Internets :)
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
It started with AV Mouse which I designed for a local T-shirt business www.springleap.com, followed by Terminated March for Teefury. From there I fell in love with making up random pretty stuff that would mean nothing in any other medium than t-shirt! It's better than canvas and sculpture, better than posters and mugs - it's ideas floating in and out of real people's real lives - and I love it!!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Just create! The worst thing you can do is to not create because of ANY reason. The more you do, the better you'll get, period. Also open your eyes to the internet - it is pure distilled inspiration. Hit up sites like theawesomer.com to keep your juices flowing. Learn from the best, then add your own thoughts.
What would be your dream job?
I still wanna be an astronaut. And I love robots. So if I can get a job creating robots in space that'd be nice. A Gundam Pilot, then.
What is your favorite thing about comedy?
It's amorphous, never concrete. By the time you think you figured it out it's something else again. And it makes smiles and laughter, and there's nothing cooler than creating happiness!
What would your ideal house be like?
In a space-robot, with an orange portal inside, armed with a blue portal-gun.
Stand-up comic vs. comic strip: which would win the battle?
Stand-up would throw the first punch, cos strip would probably have its hands rather full, what with taking it off and all. It all depends on if there's an audience or not, too. Guys don't like to see strippers getting beat up...
OK but seriously though, stand-up would win the battle of happiness provision by being a direct injection of LOL into people's lives, and crosses all kinds of boundaries (most of the time)
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
I was a massive sucker for comics, which was called manga where I'm from. By 8, every bit of paper (books, money, dad's work stuff) I touched would be transformed into (very badly drawn) robot collages. I simply could not stop drawing. My favourite manga was probably Doraemon, about the blue robot cat who brought happiness and gadgets to everyone, and lost her ears to rats.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
theawesomer.com is always a wellspring for inspiration (and them having featured my AV Mouse and Terminated March tees earned them brownie points) and always just so damn much fun.
I always visit Teefury.com everyday (duh!), and 4chan's also good for internet exploration (and exploitation). But mostly I get the internet fed to me by my twitter - I don't go to sites anymore! @tuism's favourite follows include @kotaku, @jimiyo, @ashelia, @shapshak, @engadget, @Behance :)
