It's a reference to the game Bioshock, where a type of enemy called a Big Daddy had a large drill on one arm, and wrecked everything's smurf with it.
  • Lashelsaid 50 weeks ago

So visually compelling, it makes me want to try Bioshock! Fab use of color, and I LOVE the lettering. Yum.

ditto...good luck with the sales though

also in reference to BioShock. We still never saw that one image that said "Adam" with a plasmid put on a tee yet...I wonder why as that'd be the Bio reference I'd want on a tee

You couldn't be more wrong. The words are fantastic. It needs the Art Deco Font and the phrase is simple yet bittersweet, like the game itself. Like the adverts and architecture of Rapture.. what appears as benign and harmless can take on a drastic and dark shadow and become something horrifying and haunting.
  • Seriousnesssaid 50 weeks ago

You mean the "Got Adam?" one with the plasmid bottle on it, like a milk ad? Yeah I'm buying this one and if that one does ever manage to pop up, I'll nab that too. But this one is really good.

Would have bought it in an instant if there were no words on it. That slogan is so far removed from anything Bioshock that it makes me want to buy the shirt and paint over it with something (anything) more on base. My first stab: Rapture, Sweet Rapture.
  • Impartialsaid 50 weeks ago

Great shirt. Comment from an English major, though: there should be another comma in front of "baby," so the quote reads "Drill, baby, drill". I'm pretty sure we're not drilling babies. :]

I do agree with others, though. The phrase is unnecessary.

  • Custardiasaid 50 weeks ago

Kinda creepy, but not in a good way. Agree with the above posters that the cheesy and frankly, offputting words ruin the game reference. If I met a guy with this shirt on, I'd run a mile.

The shirt is cool, but not feeling it. I haven't bought a shirt in a long time because everything is tied into something else(TV show, video game, movie, toys, etc). Where are all the artists with there own creations? The street art compilations? I'm tired of all the pop cult references and crossover stuff.
  • Jackpot777said 50 weeks ago

If the artist were to go to certain political discussion forums and post a link here:

1 - every Sarah Palin follower would consider buying it.

2 - it would go triple platinum pancakes before noon.

3 - the level of Freeper Derp on this site would be excruciatingly painful for a month or so, as every one of them submits a Ronald Reagan design (and complains that their First Amendment rights are being crushed because their design isn't being accepted).

Yet another buyer who loves the Bioshock reference, the artwork, and the font, yet loathes the text. I get that it's a witty MashedPotato reference using the game and a popular political movement, but I just can't make myself wear a shirt that has that slogan on it without any context to make it clear I'm not supporting that particular movement. :( The art is gorgeous, though -- I would love to see more by this artist, that's for sure! :)

luckyduck96 said: Ok, I have to say that I love Bioshock and really want a Biochock tee shirt. I am just not sold with the "Drill, Baby Drill" slogan on it.. I don't care if it wasn't meant to mean anything Republican, I would rather not have that on my shirt. xD

But, that Adam shirt I saw a while ago i would LOVEEE to have.

You clearly do care if it's "republican" because you would rather not have that slogan on your shirt because of it's association with the party, I mean you literally just made the connection yourself, so it's pretty obvious. Use some perspective man. The slogan is absolutely brilliant for this franchise. It could've been coined by the Mad Men of Rapture for eff's sake. It works in conjunction with this piece and fiction. Secondly, any oil-humping republican who comes up to you to go "HECK YEAH LET'S DRILL!" you can scoff at and walk away with them scratching their head like an idiot. Finally, most would probably leave you alone once they see the "BLOODY DRILL" as blood has long been an image associated with DISPARAGING the oil industry. All arguments for wearing the shirt while being politically aware.

If you just don't want to wear it because you want to avoid politics in general, well you've done a pretty good job of not avoiding them by using them as a means of not purchasing a tee shirt.

    w/e I got mine. I'm out.

Bioshock's cool and all but I'm trying to manage my money so I'm afraid I'll have to pass up this one.

I'm not bashing the artist or the concept. I looooove Bioshock, such a creative franchise. But (I also made this comment on Facebook) the drill pointing downwards bears striking resemblance of a powerful force of nature that we call "tornado." Considering all of the recent tragedies that tornadoes have been involved with (Joplin, Alabama, OKC, etc...), the design is kind of tasteless. I'm sorry, this is not a critique. Just a little nudge in the side, to draw attention to a slight tenderness in the American midwest right now.
  • Samposaid 50 weeks ago

The artwork is great, but it's the quote that really makes this for me. Perhaps the naysayers just don't get the Andrew Ryan/Ayn Rand tie in to Palin's quote.

Kudos! I'll be wearing it soon.

Yes, I'm glad that we don't call those powerful forces of nature "drills", otherwise someone might be able to strangely misinterpret this shirt. ;P I mean, it's tasteless because it has something that is shaped like a tornado, seriously? That doesn't really make any sense to me..

Anyway, I'm in for one.. The text is a perfect combination with Bioshock, as the effects of rampant capitalism were a large part of the first game. Amazing job, jewelwing!
  • chrishorsesaid 50 weeks ago

Hm, would you happen to have this as a print? It'd be a great poster for my wall.
  • relightsaid 50 weeks ago

Definitely a split feeling in the comments about of the words... to each their own.

Just think how many more shirts would have sold though if the words had been left off. Not that it's all about selling... it's about happy people wearing t-shirts. But I'm sure happy people making money making sweet t-shirts is also a part of it.

I don't really know how this teefury site works, all I can say is I hope to see this tee make another appearance without the words.
  • relightsaid 50 weeks ago

I second the request for a print. In fact, I'd buy a hi-res wallpaper of this.

That doesn't really make any sense to me..

doesn't make sense to anyonone outside Arkham Asylum

I'm tempted to get it just cause I love the design, but I haven't played Bioshock yet so I don't get the reference. ;)

I triply agree. I love Bioshock, and I love the look of this tee, but that phrase is tacky and it takes away from the elegantly simple design.
  • wesitronsaid 50 weeks ago

The design is fantastic. And I think it works within the context of the game, where Ryan is constantly pushing isolationism and doing your own thing so that you alone can reap the benefits. Makes sense to me. I bought it as soon as I saw it. Rock on.

Absolute favorite shirt I've seen in a while, and proud to announce that this is the first shirt that I will be buying off of TeeFury after a long time of just watching the designs go buy when I remember to look.

So, without further adieu, I finally get to say this..

    Insta-buy!

I don't alway buy teefury shirts, but when I do, they're either related to video games, or a Big Lebowski reference.

    Stay nerdy my friends.

The text should have had something to do with "Would you kindly" I dig the design, but I hate to say the text ruins it for me. Congrats on the print and good luck!

Urrrggghhh, 31st May was my 21st birthday, so I didn't have time to check Teefury, and of course its a design from my favourite game series!
