Taken at face value, I really dislike this shirt. The design is nice, but the message it conveys is uber-defeatist. It's essentially the slogan of our apathetic society. Instead of taking the initiative to change things, this quote encourages you to sit back and "take it". If you're going to do a shirt like this, make the quote positive or inspirational, much like the "Laugh Everyday" shirt they did a while back.

    What's the concept you ask?

It's a sweet typography shirt, and it doesn't have two random pop culture references mashed together in a completely easy, no-thought way that people on this site seem to cream themselves over day in and day out. So just on that alone, I like it more than anything in weeks if not months on this site. Keep up the more unique work like this, thanks!

Also Hellboy, Firefly, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who (Tenth Doctor), The Walking Dead (for my husband, who LOVES zombies and has even taught our small daughters how to kill zombies in case of a zombie apocaplyse). Also for some literary shirts, how about some Nightside designs? Simon R. Green will know what I mean.

  • avidan111said 53 weeks ago

If your sitting there thinking "this shirt is so stupid, their is always more to it then just what it is." wrong. sometimes your over thinking something and stressing yourself out more then you should, after all sometime our minds can make something worse then WHAT IT IS. Sometimes you just need to just a simple saying about a situation not to over think it. and this shirt can help you do just that. Sometimes it really is what it is. and i respect it for being what it is.

and if your wondering i am contemplating buying this shirt.
  • avidan111said 53 weeks ago

That phrase actually has nothing to do with that Shakespearean reference. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" means that a name does not change the essence of what something is; "It is what it is" is a simple tautology that can be taken in a variety of ways, either as an apathetic commentary in general, or perhaps as a pragmatic viewpoint of being content with how things are when they cannot be changed, or other ways. But it definitely does not mean the same thing as the rose quote.

The saying can be apathetic, true.

That said, it isn't always apathetic. There are times in everyone's life when you simply have to deal with what is going on. Rather than spending energy in a pointless effort to change it, you simply have to handle it. It is what it is.

My interpretation was that the 'secondary'/internal line to which the hands point, is meant to be read with the large, central word first (like, for instance, the Star Wars-Robot Chicken logo), so that it would ultimately read:

"It is what it is - What is it"

I'm sorry to say but you completely miss the point. This is NOT about apathy but rather about acceptance. This is Buddhism at its core and not unlike "Laugh Everyday", ironically. StripeyMcD gets it. Accepting his/her cancer doesn't mean he/she won't fight it. Good luck, Stripey. Great design.
  • comicbookjersaid 53 weeks ago

It cracks me up that so many think that each design has to reference a movie or tv show. It's simple and fun. It's not defeatist, as someone tried to claim. There are things you can't change. If there is, then yeah, make that change, but be wise enough to know if you can't.
    Congrats on the design!
  • codenamerockysaid 53 weeks ago

Wow...how are people trying to see and think too much into this???
Its a common saying I hear on a weekly basis.

I love all the pop culture shirts as much as the next person, but can see the appeal of the typography, layout, colour and concept of this shirt. Is amazing how people see a text shirt and automatically think its a simple task in designing it.

Text shirts HAVE to be clever enough to carry the concept through words alone....coming up with a phrase (word) worthy of putting on a smart shirt is a challenge in itself.

    So kudos sir.

I don't read that into it at all. What I get is allow things to mean what they are rather than trying to read extra meanings into everything. Not everything has to have dual meanings. some times a white sheet of paper is just blank. It doesn't HAVE to be a polar bear in a snowstorm...

I'm actually rather disappointed in TeeFury for posting this t-shirt. Lately, I have come to expect clever artwork and designs. Even the Orange saying 'Knock Knock' or the Uncle Sam commanding the viewer to make him a sammich would have been far better than this.

This, sadly, seems unoriginal and boring compared to the spectacular designs I've seen in the past. I have come to expect TeeFury to provide delightfully original content and artwork. I am not saying anything against the artist, as I can see that she is undoubtedly talented, but this particular shirt is a bit of a disappointment compared to shirts that I've seen on this site in the past.

Seriously, leave the text shirts to Cafepress. I come here for art, not text.

It's odd isn't it, how people see things differently? I saw it as 'It is what it is' as using 'it' in the completely arbitrary sense, in that anything at all can be 'it', such as, for example, the most beautiful thing you have ever experienced (now surely to say 'it is what it is' about that would do nothing but reinforce 'its' beauty in your own perception? It might solidify it somehow).

I'm not quite sure who the collective are which consititute 'our apathetic scoiety', and to me personally, wearing a shirt with 'Laugh Everyday' kind of sounds like an instruction - some days you may not find reason to laugh, for example. It's too specific a statement, where as 'It is what it is' can be left up to positive, negative or any connotations you choose.

Ah... Sad it's not Dr. Who?

I think it's nice and simple. I enjoy it. It's not a shirt I would have to explain 10-12 times when I wore it out (Like 90% of the shirts that come through here.) Plus, it's my basic phylosophy.

And it's not a slogan of apathy. For instance. I have a month to find a place to live. I'm looking hard for apartments, but I'm not freaking the hell out, crying myself to sleep, and resenting my old housemates for wanting to find a new place to live. It's life. Stressing won't solve ANYTHING. Gotta roll with the punches, and get back up and go again.

It's really annoying, and sad, that people expect these shirts to be "in reference to", or a mash-up of some tv show/movie/video game/etc. What happened to art for the sake of art? Why does every piece have to be a play on something?

Sure, this isn't the best design, but, it is what it is. I like it.

The problem with doing something inspirational is the lack of originality. If you want something positive like that, go out and spend five minutes in a store. You'll find a bunch of it. Not everything has to be optimistic and happy BS. A little apathy tends to make things run more smoothly, anyway.

For the shirt itself: Not really a fan of plain text shirts. Would definately take this as a wall-art of some sort, though. And the orange sidebar? AWESOME.

Lot of debate getting stirred up. I understand wanting a break from the combine one thing or another formula, and a simple statement is well and good, but... what's with the hands?

I just don't understand the touch. There doesn't seem to be any word play it's going for. It doesn't have relevance to the statement. It's not especially pretty. The "it is what it is" response to that question could be what it's going for, I guess? I dunno. I'd only buy a shirt that didn't make some sort of sense if it's really pretty. An almost pure text shirt shouldn't be confusing. Does anyone have an explanation for what the hands are doing? Spelling out a curse would take a very, very selective reading.

I was critiquing the slogan, not the designer or the design itself. I believe that all circumstances are subject to change, for the better, given the effort. I'm sorry that belief offends you to the point of questioning my efforts. If that holds any bearing on the discussion at hand, then yes, I strive to be proactive in society. Among other things, every year I help organize events which donate considerably to the United Way and smaller, more targeted charities.

I think its suppose to be "it is what is it" then the arms pointing asking "is what it?"

    "It is what it is"*

The arm arrows are supposed to say "What is it?" and the text as a whole answers that by saying "it is what it is."

I think that the message is the exact opposite. It's not meant to get you down it's meant to keep you from getting down. It's in an undeniable fact that there are some things in this crazy world you just can't change. Like when it rains on your big game or your cat dies of old age or you accidentally spill your gummy bears in the toilet. Sh*t happens and IT is what IT is: YOU decide what you make of IT.

I actually don't agree. "It is what it is" isn't defeatist at all. When I say "It is what it is," it's a nod to something that while unchangeable, is not going to get you down. I think the post about 5+ months fighting colon cancer is inspirational, and not only that, but it really points to the fight. That person is saying 'I may have colon cancer, it is what it is, but I'm not going to let that depress me or get me down.' We're minimalizing the effect we're allowing bad things to have on us, and powering through them because we know that only our outlook on it will change how it affects us. I Love this shirt, and I think it's awesome.
  • phildregersaid 52 weeks ago

I think that the people who have a problem with this saying are those who feel the need to be in control of every event and every circumstance. Well guess what? You aren't.
I can see the disdain for apathetic use and the person who uses it as a means to deflect their responsibility.
All together though, it expresses an understanding that certain things are beyond us incredible mortals, even though we like to act contrarily.
