The Ka-Tet of Nineteen
About the artist
Tell us about this design.
This design is for all the Tower junkies (like me) out there who've been craving a t-shirt. The Ka-Tet of Nineteen refers to the companions of Roland Deschain in Stephen King's The Dark Tower books. There are several references that any fans of DT should catch, as well.
I really wanted to do a shirt referencing DT, because it's one of my favourite series of books.. and I don't think I've ever seen a DT shirt on any daily shirt site. I thought it would be cool to branch away from video games and pop culture for a day and have a literary tee up. Thankee sai.
Where are you from?
I am from a little town in middle-of-nowhere Missouri, just north of the Ozarks. I've lived here all my life, but would love to move to Portland, Oregon.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
My first Teefury shirt, Peach Nouveau, was actually my first foray into t-shirt design. I thought it would be awesome to do nouveau-style video game characters, and just went with it. I had no idea what I was doing at the time, and am still unsure about some things--but I'm learning as I go! Thankfully, other artists (like Jimiyo) have provided good examples and articles to help me along!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Don't be afraid to put your work out there and accept critique. Fear of failure keeps some of the best artists from getting out there and making art. If you fail, so what? Keep at it, keep making art and don't be lazy.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, either. I’ve learned a lot in the past few months, because I’ve taken the initiative to ask.
What would be your dream job?
What I'm doing right now is pretty awesome--freelance illustrating is stressful, but fun and rewarding at the same time. I think my biggest dream job ever would be to work for WoTC, Blizzard or Marvel (and have them pay to relocate me--hah!). Unf, unf. Or with Felicia Day, because she is awesome.
What is your favorite thing about creating art?
I just love being able to make something from nothing. There's something so ridiculously satisfying about filling a blank canvas with something you're proud to show people. Art is a challenge. On that note, I definitely do enjoy the reactions I get, as well.
What would your ideal house be like?
Completely free, with an art nouveau staircase. I'd like the top floor to be contemporary and fabulously styled, with tons of nicely framed and matted artwork, while the basement would be entirely nerded out. The entrance to it would be a tardis, and the walls inside would have nerdy murals and posters and toys and tons and tons of video games. And a bar. :) With a pool.
Marvel vs. DC: which would win the battle?
Marvel. I feel almost like a traitor, saying that, since Harley Quinn is my favourite character of all time ever... but come on. X-men, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc.. They would rock DC. Hard.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
When I was a kid, I watched more cartoons than anything (no comic shop in town, and I didn't get out much). I think my absolute favourite cartoon was Batman: The Animated Series. As I mentioned earlier, I have had a long-lasting love-affair with Harley Quinn. I've cosplayed her twice and it never gets old.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
Reddit.com keeps me from getting ANY work done, most days. I really enjoy reading Kotaku.com and lurking on some Tumblr blogs (RampagedReality.com comes to mind). Teemagnet.com and Shirtoid.com are great ways to keep up-to-date on shirt designs.
Any shout outs?
My facebook page fans are the most awesome ones ever, I'm pretty sure. And my husband, Kevin, of course-- even though he has yet to finish The Dark Tower series.
Long days and pleasant nights, all. :)
