Tell us about this design.

I really like those old National Park posters, and i thought it would be fun to do a geeky version. 

I'm originally from the greater Los Angeles area, but now find myself living just outside of St. Louis, MO.

It's something that I've been doing on and off since the early '90s. In those days everybody involved in the LA graffiti scene was designing t-shirts, whether that meant for screen printing or airbrushing (which was hot at the time). My parents bought me my first airbrush when I was in High School and I started a little partnership with another artist friend. He was amazing and I was just okay, but it lit a spark that got me on the path to art. 

I went from graphic design, to coloring comics and hadn't really done much serious drawing in close to a decade. Thankfully I was involved in art and looking at some pretty great drawings "all day e'y day" as they say. Actually, I did do a little bit of t-shirt designing for fun a few years ago. A friend of mine built a one color (wooden)screen printing setup in his garage and we spent maybe 15 hours a week learning how to burn screens, and print shirts. It was a pretty fun hobby and we were able to make a few bucks to support our habit, by selling them guerrilla style.

I eventually discovered the online t-shirt designing/contest community a couple of years ago  and spent a few months contemplating doing some drawing, a couple more months doing some doodles and a couple of more months building up the nerve to start entering designs. I'm totally addicted to it now. 

There is no substitute for hard work. Don't be afraid of criticism, a thick skin is essential if you want to make it in art. Get used to hearing "no", but don't let it discourage you, because that first "yes" will be so sweet. 

I work in comics, that sounds like a dream job to me! Just being able to do art and make a living at it is pretty awesome.

The term "graphic novel" always sounds a little goofy to me. I generally think of them as trade paper backs or collections, but I guess whatever it takes to get people reading them. There's some great books out there and I couldn't recommend The Walking Dead, Chew or (the book I color) The Boys, enough. 

The Walking Dead is one of the few comic books that is filled with those "punch you in the gut" moments. There are certain turns or deaths that just leave you with your jaw on the floor. 

Kicked out the House by De La Soul is pretty ideal.

............................ (wait for it) .............................. Suspense. 

It's a tough battle between cartoons and movies. My friends and I were pretty huge cartoon junkies though, so I guess as a kid I'd give cartoons a slight edge. There were so many great ones, The Herculoids, Thundaar, Mighty Man and Yuk, Battle of the Planets, The Mighty Heroes, etc. I don't think I could pick just one.  

There was one animated movie (probably a season of episodes hacked up into a movie)  that I don't think any of my friends ever saw more than once. It was on showtime or hbo way back in the days and it was about a kid with a giant robot named "Dynamo". This was during the big Voltron, Shogun Warriors, Macross boom of the '80s. I've never been able to figure out exactly what that was or what the title of it was, it may have been "Space Dynamo". Whatever it was, it seemed pretty cool when we were kids.
