A word from TeeFury:
Can you believe there are still people out there who don't think video games can be art?
Tell us a bit about this design.
Can you believe there are still people out there who don't think video games can be art?
Tell us a bit about this design.
I have been slightly obsessed with Alphonse Mucha for a while now. I hadn't been able to do much art recently, due to my nasty work schedule, and I was trying to find an excuse to draw something reminiscent of art nouveau. I'm a huge nerd, and thought it would be wonderful to pair some of my favourite video game ladies with my favourite art style ever. Peach came to mind first, because she's the first video game girl I remember, and I don't know anyone who doesn't like Mario Bros. :)
Where are you from?
I'm from a podunk town in the middle of Missouri. Our claim to fame is ragtime and the Missouri State Fair. It's thrilling!
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
Cool facts: I have Tourette's and can make a very realistic goat noise (a marketable talent, I'm sure). My tics make for a great drinking game! Oh, and my comic book counterpart would definitely be Harley Quinn—the resemblance is creepy.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
I could stand them not knowing about the 40-page rocketshippy fanfiction I wrote when I was 12. No, seriously, you don't have to tell them that.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Doctor Who, Firefly, DDR, Earthbound, Katamari Damacy, fresh mushrooms, oil paint, Deadwood, Dexter, the Dark Tower series, cake/Cake, Flogging Molly and my dog Harley. Oh, and my husband, Kevin.
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
I drew lots and lots of unicorns and dragons, and copied from those rainbow Lisa Frank notebooks. And way, way too much Team Rocket.
What is your favorite thing about art nouveau?
I love that it tries to blur the line between the every day/advertising and fine art. That's especially my favourite thing about Mucha—he was amazing in both aspects. Plus I love the subject matter and the focus on line.
Peaches vs. oranges: which would win the battle?
Definitely oranges. Peaches look too dainty to hold their own in a fight. Plus, oranges have a cool texture and peaches are fuzzy and kind of weird me out.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
It's actually a shirt I JUST bought from Teefury. Vashta Nerada. I love it because I am ridiculously obsessed with Doctor Who. Silence in the Library is my second favourite episode, and I love that you have to be a fan of the show to know where it's from. And the design is top-notch!
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
I think gaming, because it has both literary and theatrical elements to it, and there's such a wide variety. My favorite video game ever would probably be Chrono Trigger, but I really enjoy Katamari Damacy and DDR because they have a lot of replay value.
What inspires your work?
Usually I'm big on the female form and portrait work, but recently I've been getting into pop culture like mad. Right now I am all about making nerdy stuff for other nerds.
Any shout outs?
Just to the folks over at Armageddon.org for supporting my art for so long! :)
