I’m a fan of Hergé’s deceptively simple-looking line work, and wanted to pay tribute. After doing a watercolor mash-up of the Wizard of Oz and Star Wars for my niece’s third birthday, the thought came to me that Tintin and the Tin Man both had heart, and the pun I could wrench out of their names couldn’t be passed up.
Where are you from?
All over. My dad was in the Navy, and I never really spent more than three years in one place. Most recently, Denver.
What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
In my down time, I wrestle bears.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
The bears are of the “Teddy” variety.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Sweet corn ice cream, Futurama, Zots, and cupcake baking.
What kind of art did you make as a kid?
Sweeping scenes of the McDonald Land characters in the midst of World War II battles, a Battlestar Galactica (original flavor) comic, and stories about Garfield teaming up with Max Headroom to fight Teen Wolf.
Which fictional character do you most relate to?
Lane Meyer from ‘Better Off Dead’ or maybe Linus from Peanuts.
Oz vs. Neverland: which would win the battle?
Oz, without question. If ‘Hook’ is anything to go by, the inhabitants of Neverland spend most of their time throwing imaginary pies at each other, whilst Oz has witches who steal young ladies’ heads. Also, a lion.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
I have a Henchman 24 Memorial shirt from the Venture Brothers Shirt of the Week Club that I take great pride in. It’s comfortably melancholy.
Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
I think they all have their time and place, I’d be hard pressed to choose one. Gaming you get a chance to be a part of a story; I’m a fan of RPGs, strategy games, and good ol’ fashioned shoot-em-ups (Dragon Age, Prof. Layton, Uncharted). Reading gives you a chance to envision the world you’re immersed in (currently on a Richard Stark kick through the Parker series). Movies are a great way to let yourself relax (‘Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure’ will always be my favorite, if for no other reason than it explores every genre of film).
What inspires your work?
My family, friends, and lack of sleep.
