Where are you located?
The wonderful city of Waterloo, Iowa.
Tell us about yourself:
I work full time as an illustrator/animator for a company called Phantom EFX. We are the leader in PC slot machine games. It's a great place to work, and I've learned quite a bit, especially how to speed up my workflow. I am married with 3 kids, and spend most of my free time working on freelance projects or playing video games.
What's a day in the life of Michael like?
Get up, drink barrels of coffee, go to work, work, come home, hang with the family, work on art, sleep. Repeat.
What's your general opinion on Lost, how it ended, what you liked about it?
I was pretty pleased with the ending. I know it was a bit controversial, but I think they nailed it. I don't think a show has ever captured my attention as well as Lost did. It had it's low moments, but in general the ride was so gratifying each episode just let me wanting more.
What is your favorite shirt?
To be honest, my favorite shirt is a green vneck tee with nothing on it! Crazy, I know!
Are you a fan of any new TV shows?
I know it's not new, but I've been watching Dexter recently. Really digging that show. Modern Family and The Middle are a couple other shows I try not to miss.
What was your first printed commercial piece of artwork?
Hmm... I worked for a screen printing company for a while in high school. I eventually got promoted to the art department. I can't honestly say which design I worked on first.
How did that feel?
I do remember getting pretty excited when they started running a design I had done on the print floor. I think at that point it was pretty surreal seeing my artwork on something other than a piece of paper.
What's your art process like, from initial sketch to finished product?
I generally do a pretty rough sketch, either with traditional pencil and paper, or Sketchbook Pro. I'll generally start doing a tighter rendering of the sketch, then begin inking in Manga Studio. From here, I take it into Photoshop for color.
What technology do you hope to see in your lifetime?
Transporters. Definitely transporters.
Any shout outs or plugs?
Huge shout out to Ian Leino, Mike Mitchell, Aaron Hogg and Blair Sayer. These guys have always been there to offer feedback and conversation. I really appreciate their willingness to respond. It means a lot, guys!
