You recently became the art director for Designbyhumans.com. How's that been?
It has been awesome, a roller coaster ride for sure. I have been learning a lot about the printing process and also what goes into a successful company like DBH. The team are great and the Print shop is a joyous place to be for a T-shirt nerd like me. I am hoping over the coming months that we will receive designs that make me get excited and will make the hard decision of picking designs a little easier.

Was it always your plan to move from the UK to sunny California, snag
a beautiful wife and become an all powerful art director of one the
largest online t-shirt design contest companies?
Well the wife part was intentional but the rest just happened as a result of my wife being in California. I have always liked DBH, I like how they push boundaries and take risks with their printing. I've always had an AD position in my future plans but this opportunity arose and I grabbed it with both hands. California or the USA has always been somewhere I've wanted to visit or live, ever since I saw E.T back in the 80's.

Are you finding time for art?
Obviously my time is more limited now but I still find time to fit in a few commissions here and there. I have a few projects coming up that I will be working on in my spare time so you should still see a trickle of wotto stuff out there. I'm a workaholic but I guess now I can be a little more choosey about the projects I take on, which is nice.

What are your thoughts/observations on California and Californians?
California is awesome. I love the beach and L.A and where I am is about half way between the two. The weather is obviously better and the food that is available to you here is incredible. My waistline is certainly feeling it. Californians seem like a decent bunch and so far no one has really upset me. The only down side for me is the pollution in the city which frankly is a disgrace and the obvious divide between the very very very very rich and the impoverished. All in all though this place kicks ass.

What advice do you have to offer for aspiring artists?
Work hard. If you think you can get to a professional level doing design when it suits you, think again. I'm sure Jimiyo will agree, when I tell you that being a designer is a full time gig in our current design hungry world. For the last three years I have worked long days and nights to get my art noticed and used professionally. Secondly, never give up, grow into your own style, learn new skills daily and thrive on getting better and better. I had many doors slammed in my face, many times. Finally, be professional. Just because you work from home and wear only your underwear til lunchtime doesn't mean you can act the same way when you are dealing with clients.

Any specific advice for managing online persona?
The beauty of the internet is that you can ultimately carve your own path. I would say find the small group of people who like your work, and reach out to the communities they are part of. Your popularity will grow but always remember to treat people right, clients and fans alike. I like to reward my followers for their loyalty as much as I can. Again act professionally, on the web people see everything you write.

Where are your favorite places to hang out online?
The Black Rock Collective is a nice place to hide from the hustle and bustle of the internet and they offer great advice too. Unfortunately you have to be a member for access so that's no use to anyone. I increasingly like the DBH forum because it's not too crowded and people seem to be nice. I like to poke my nose into the comments here on Teefury too as that can be a friendly crowd.

Any favorite foods?
I love my wife's cooking. Seriously she is the master of the grill. She made a chicken pie from scratch and a souffle the other day, both her first time. Both came out awesome. I'm pretty sure she is fattening me up for Christmas.

Top three favorite movies/tv/music (or whatever entainment tickles your fancy)
I am liking the new season of Dexter a lot. I haven't been to the movies in a while but I did watch 28 weeks later on Halloween which I enjoyed a lot. Music is a sore point. I am in desperate need of new music. I like the sound of the Neon Trees and Hurts have caught my attention too.
