A word from the curator:
"We have to go back!"
Tell us about this design.
As a massive fan of Lost's characters over the six seasons, I wanted to make something that put a long con, practical joke spin on the mysterious events. All Jacob and the Man in Black needed was a smoke machine, a rubber John Locke mask and a lot of patience.
This design started out as a possible or alternate ending, but now I see it more as a revelation at the reunion party. Sun, Jin, Sayid and Jack are all miraculously alive, naturally. Ben is just off camera, fetching the theatrical knife that he pretended to stab Jacob with. See, it all makes perfect sense now.
Where are you from?
England. Some of your readers may not know what an Eng is, so I should explain that they are small, imp-like creatures that summon the fogs our country is known for. Sadly they are an endangered species now.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I went from being a customer to a designer this February and I've been hooked on contests and submissions ever since. This is my 7th design to be printed, so it's been very rewarding. Getting so much feedback and having a reason to draw every week is brilliant.
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Don't be afraid to fail. Be brave, get involved with a few sites and put your designs out there for people to see, vote and judge. There's a lot to learn and it'll happen week by week until you hit your stride. Try different styles, try crazy ideas, bite off way more than you can chew sometimes, screw up, embarrass yourself, accidentally design something awesome, make new friends, learn from other designers... every kind of experience will make you better!
What would be your dream job?
Working on character-driven videogames and designing shirts and other merchandise. Wait, King of the Universe! Do you have to take my first answer?
What are your feelings about modern art?
That's a big question covering a lot of artists and types of art! I guess the stereotypical modern art is pretentious garbage, written about but even more pretentious wafflers and then sold for exorbitant amounts of money to rich, pretentious suckers. And that is definitely true of some of it, and it even has its own weird charm. But of course a lot of it, from Art Deco to Surrealism to Pop Art and contemporary popular artists, that's the best and most imaginative and varied artwork humanity has created.
What would your dream house be like?
It'd probably still be one of those dream houses they make you draw in 2nd grade, with slides and robot butlers and a helipad on the roof. If I ever grow up so much that I don't want that, it's all over. :)
Polar bears vs. Grizzly bears: which would win the battle?
Polar! Especially the teleporting, fish biscuit eating variety.
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
Right now, my Zelda shirts are getting a lot of wear time. Skyward Sword can't get here fast enough.
What was your favorite as a kid: comics, cartoons, or movies? Was there a specific title you liked most of all?
Movies. And of course it's the obvious ones Star Wars, The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future, The Wizard of Speed and Time, Goonies, Indiana Jones... I don't think it's nostalgia talking to say the eighties really were a golden time for kids movies. Movies for kids that were good enough for grownups.
What are a few of your favorite websites?
TeeFury (::grin::), GoNintendo, Ain't It Cool News, John K's cartooning blog (johnkstuff.blogspot.com), Dadsbigplan.com (cool music, trailers n' pop culture) and NegativeWorld.org (the most polite and friendly Nintendo fan forum around).
Any shout outs?
Thanks to everyone who saw this design on my last TeeFury print and said 'Gimme!'. That's why it's here today! And thanks to the designers who have been so generous to me with their help and encouragement.
